Founded by Albert Obergoizer , a Zimbabwean national who moved to Ireland in 2019 and spotted a niche in the coffee market for a premium instant and so the Dublin Coffee Company was born.
And there you have it, short and sweet. Or bitter maybe, it is coffee after all.

The Apple Farm is located in county Tipperary. Apples have been grown in this area for hundreds of years, and since 1968 they have been planting more orchards to increase supply. As well as apples, you will find pears, plums, sweet cherries, strawberries and raspberries. There is also have a Camping and Caravan Park on the farm. Apple juice and mixed juices from all the other fruit are produced on the farm. (Be sure to check the video at the end.)
Cornelius or Con as he is mostly know is the son of Willem and Ali. The Traas family moved from The Netherlands to Ireland in the late 1960's to grow fruit. They had been growing fruit in Holland since the 1800's, but because it was difficult to find new land there for fruit-growing, Willem and Ali decided to make the move to Ireland. They looked at a number of farms, and decided on the one where The Apple Farm is now situated, between Cahir and Clonmel on the main Limerick-Waterford road. There was an old orchard on the farm, and they judged by the good crop they saw on these trees, that apples could be grown in this area. For the first few years, as well as establishing new apple and plum orchards, the family grew tulips, dried peas, grain crops and strawberries.
Because there was no structure to enable them to sell their fruit locally, they opened a shop at the farm in the early 1970's. It is the same barn that they use to this day to sell most of what they produce from 40 acres of fruit.
These days the produce on sale is quite diverse. 60 varieties of apples are grown on the farm, and about 15 types are available in the farm shop depending on when they ripen. Four varieties of strawberries, three of raspberry, four of cherry, three types of plums, and two pears compliment the range in the farm shop, again depending on when they ripen. Some of the strawberries are available as pick-your-own in the middle of summer.
In addition, a range of juices have been made on the farm since 1995. There is apple juice, mixtures including strawberry, raspberry, and blackcurrant juices, and some sensational sparkling juices also. These are all made using fruits grown right there.
Fruits from the farm are also used to make jams, jelly and cider vinegar.

It was when he met Niall Harty though that the magic really started to happen.
The guys launched a natural snack brand called Origin which did pretty well but Niall & Ross knew they could do even better.

It can be used in a variety of ways to suit your lifestyle. Protein balls and pancakes can be pimped up by a scoop of this wonder powder or it can simply be blended with cold milk as a regular drink or incorporated into your daily coffee to give it that extra boost. Juspy has 18g protein in each 40g serving. The star ingredient is 10,000mg of marine collagen in a blend of cacao, coconut nectar, pea and rice protein, coconut milk, ashwagandha, Baobab, Himalayan Pink salt, natural flavour, and sodium ascorbate. No stabilisers, no refined sugar, no additives. It is gluten and dairy free but as it contains marine collagen (a fish source) it is not vegan. It contains coconut sugar which is a natural sugar claiming to be low GI so diabetics should consume at their own discretion. ]]>As we look forward to easing out of lockdowns it is necessary to stop, take a breath and look how resilient the world has been over the past year.
Craft Food Traders was born out of necessity during the pandemic and has transformed into a one stop shop for Irish Artisan Food and drink. Health and wellness have always been central to the choice of products we provide our customers online. Now more than ever consumers are more conscious of what they are buying and are trying to support local as much as possible. It has been amazing getting to know all the amazing Irish producers behind the brands we stock.
Our selection is always expanding, and we have gone from a few bits and pieces to a full range of products. We have been able to branch them out into speciality sections like vegan, gluten free, health and wellness, indulgence and most recently we added a “for the kitchen” range.
Health and wellness have also become a top priority for employers as many employees were forced to work remotely and suddenly were cut off from their usual social outlets at work. It is looking like remote working will continue and the return to work will likely center around a hybrid approach. Finding the balance between optimal working in a different environment and health and wellbeing is continually evolving.
We curated a selection of gift and care boxes that are perfect for corporate staff gifts and of course there is always the option to build your own if there are items you’d prefer to include. Keeping people connected has been hard during the past year but small things like sending a care package has helped to stay connected with their workplace.

]]>Our orange juice and smoothies are packaged in Polyethylene terephthalate or PET. This is basically plastic. The 250ml bottle, cap and label are all completely recyclable and in fact empty, rinsed PET bottles have a value in the recycling industry as they can be processed into a raw material for multiple products from packaging to clothing. Of course it is essential that PET waste is disposed of correctly. PET should not be dumped with general waste where it will probably end up in landfill.
Closed Loop Plastic Recycling can ensure that no plastic ends up in the sea or in landfill.
Closed loop means that the PET/Plastic ultimately gets returned to the PET industry and re-emerges in another product or package thereby eliminating the requirement to create new PET/Plastic.
Our apple juice, carrot & apple juice and lemonades are packaged in one-way glass. Empty containers should be rinsed and placed in glass recycling bin. This glass can be recycled into multiple products. It is estimated that 80% of recycled glass ends up in a new glass container. Other uses include tiles and sand. Glass should not be dumped in landfill as it can take thousands of years to break down.
Glass Recycling can ensure that glass containers do not take up space in landfill dumping sites.
We can all do our part to recycle responsibly and ensure that our recyclables end up in the proper facilities.
]]>Cards on the table here straight away. Here in Craft Food Traders we are not doctors, dietitians, nutritionists or nutritional therapists. We do, however, have the experience of over 20 years in the food industry; observing trends, nutritionally analysing food and talking to proper experts. This is a massive area with any amount of published material out there so we are going to narrow this piece down under 3 main headings; Basic Nutrition, Weight Loss, Performance.
We eat to survive. Our bodies use food and drink as fuel. This fuel is converted to energy which is measured in calories. The energy drives everything we do, from thinking to running and everything in between. Rough figures, a human being on average needs around 2000 calories every day to get through all the normal activities of existing, working, playing, etc.
Pretty much every natural food out there has some calories in it. The basic components of the food being carbohydrate, fat and protein.
Of course different foods provide different quantities of these components plus potentially a wide variety of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
The vitamins and minerals perform a wide variety of functions in addition to the function of the food as an energy source.
So essentially we need the food as a source of energy but depending on the food itself we get varying levels of nutrition.
Let's move on.
We are all familiar with the term "balanced diet". In simple terms this means keeping a healthy balance of the main dietary components of Carbs, Protein and Fats and including as many other nutrients as possible. Another balance that's important is that between "healthy" and "unhealthy" options. If a diet is heavy on indulgence type foods; chocolate, biscuits, wine, sweets, it's going to be very difficult to achieve nutritional balance with the remaining daily calorie budget. This diet will be too high on carbs and too low on everything else.
Let's be realistic. Everyone should enjoy a tasty treat. We have a whole section in our online store devoted to indulgence and we are very proud of these quality Irish products. What is important is to balance these choices with other more nutritious choices.
When we talk about diet and health and healthy eating it's almost certain this conversation will come around to weight loss unless you are a fairly serious sports person. Personally I am not comfortable with the focus on weight as there are other important considerations such as fitness (many people are fit but overweight), body shape and well-being. However generally speaking weight can be a good metric to measure progress on a new healthy lifestyle journey.
With some exceptions (maybe) gaining weight is caused by consuming more energy than you expend. Energy comes in the form of the food and drink you consume and is burned up by activity and movement. If an individual knows their calorie requirement for normal daily activity, adds on some extra for exercise and only consumes that calorie quantity they will stay at their current weight. To lose weigh you create a calorie deficit, to gain weight you create a calorie excess.
Simples! Let's not get into body shapes and muscle mass etc in this article. The majority of us are not gaining weight through addition of muscle. This is actually quite a difficult thing to achieve.
The Fitness Chef offers a very practical approach towards management of calories. He doesn't demonise your favourite guilty pleasures, just encourages you to control your portions and be aware of the contribution.
Some of us are into physical activity to such a degree that we want to use food to help our performance in this area.
Someone like Evan Lynch who specialises in this area can develop a whole programme to suit an individuals requirements in the area so we won't be backing ourselves into any corners on this blog.
Suffice to say that depending on each requirement there is a bit of research, analysis and planning required in order to maximise nutrition to achieve physical goals. Our Wellness section can help source some of these foods, particularly in drinks and snacks. What you eat and when you eat it can be very important to how your perform.

A lot of the discussion on the effect of the pandemic on the overall economy has highlighted the existence of two economies. OK, everybody is affected equally by the restrictions but in economic terms there are essentially 2 different situations.
Those whose incomes are maintaining and are stable. This will include most of those in the employment of multinationals and the public service and within the Food Industry it's those in retail (excluding convenience).
Then there are those who are "parked up". This covers anyone employed in events, personal care, non-essential retail and of course hospitality.
Multiples are doing well. It's been tricky to manage the restrictions but sales have increased despite the decrease in store visitors.
Our friends in Bord Bia have a lot of information and figures on this. Alcohol, baking, etc are flying. Interestingly personal care items are down , we are skimping on the deodorant and nail varnish. Generally however, this sector and it's suppliers have been busy. It's also been good for the Independent Grocer, the Health Food Store and the off-licence. Home deliveries have also accelerated. We in Craft Food Traders have seen a big increase in demand for foods that boost the immune system with Vitamins C & D and also in food deliveries as gifts for friends and family that haven't been visited in almost a year now.
We all watch on keenly in anticipation of lockdowns and vaccine roll-outs leading to a re-opening of some sort in time for summer.

Sharp suits, skinny laptops, shaking hands, doing deals, onwards and upwards.
We have now founded 2 Irish Food Companies; Wild Orchard Natural Beverages and Craft Food Traders so I suppose that technically makes me an entrepreneur. Just one who is minus the suits, etc.
If I am to look at the reality versus my expectations (which is what I am tasked to do here) I would have to say that it's a bit further from my expectations than I would have expected, if you are still following.
I must admit that I thought there would be a lot more of the wheeling, dealing, handshaking and skinny laptop tapping. What I have come across in the Irish Food Industry is predominantly ordinary enough Josephines and Joes like myself who typically had a great product idea and thought, Feck it, I'm going for it. Typically the next phase is long hours and days of hair net and white coat wearing, pallet pulling, white van driving and every now and again a Key Buyer or investor meeting where that suit gets a run out.
Why do we do it? This is a question I have asked myself a few times and I suppose that you have to be at something but there must be more to it than that.
It's not for either of the following reasons:
Money. Ha ha ha ha ha. It's really not. If you want to accumulate money and wealth get yourself a job in a blue chip multinational and learn how to get yourself up the echelons to the bonuses, share options, etc. This is not an opinion, this is a fact. The majority of millionaires have become millionaires in this way. Not many billionaires, mind you.
More free time. Unfortunately I can't use the ha ha ha response again but no, forget that. This is something you will typically have less of. OK, maybe in later years but unless you are very sharp indeed you will not figure this one out for a long time. There is always, always something that needs to be done.
Being your own boss: Not really. Sure, you ultimately call the shots but at times it can feel like you have even more bosses than you had in your old job. Customers, investors even your staff.
So why?
Controlling your own destiny. This is a big part of it. It doesn't always seem like it but you have the opportunity to shape your business according to your vision. Not easily done but it's possible and worth reaching for.
Testing yourself. When you step into this arena you will either survive, thrive or fail. You will not get any marks for effort. You will not get a pass because something "out of your control" affected the outcome. If you don't get it right it will not be good. You learn from failure and all those other cliches but when you are in the middle of it you begin to understand the implications of that. That provides a lot of the buzz and fuels the extreme joy of the successes and terrible disappointments of the failures. You need to move on from both of these quickly.
Sense of Achievement. There is a lot of this. Maybe it's your first new Artisan Irish Food Product. It's great to walk in a shop and see the result of your creativity and determination sitting there on the shelf. There are so many achievements along the way; getting that factory up and running, landing that sale, hitting the financial milestones.
So what would I say to someone thinking about taking the plunge?
If it is in your head to do it, then do it. Even if this idea doesn't work the next one will. In any case it's worth a shot.

At the time we were very much trading as Wild Orchard. (We established Craft Food Traders as a separate sales & distribution business in 2018) and initial conversations went along the lines of making deliveries on each other's behalf; i.e. Wild Orchard makes Clintons Crisps delivery and they make ours.
It soon became clear that this would work much better if we, Wild Orchard,actually took ownership of the whole process and the products. That's what sowed the seeds for the creation of Craft Food Traders. Our initial tagline being "Food Service and Specialty Retail all over Ireland". This is when we became dedicated to creating a great customer experience from order to delivery.
Next logical step of course was to offer this service and all our great products straight to the consumer. Admittedly Covid-19 has pushed this process along but now that we are here we love the direct contact we now have with the final users of our great products. So, on to our those products and their great producers. Legends of the Irish Food Industry one and all.
Jo's Absolute Nutrition: Joanne and James have achieved so much in such a short space of time. They have created a great range of healthy snacks suitable for family and athlete alike.

Our neighbors and friends here in County Limerick, Mike and Denis Sutton have built a state-of-the-art water bottling plant in Ballyneety.
Fiona Keane has been working really hard to establish this great brand here in Ireland. A firm favourite with active folk.
Caroline & Joe Rigney run a beautiful free range farm in Co. Limerick and are best know for their excellent free range pork and beef. Caroline also produces some excellent granola.
Synerchi Kombucha are now long term suppliers and constantly adding their great range of hralthy drinks produced in Donegal.
Possibly our longest standing supplier. Fantastic people and always a lovely place to visit.
Of course our sister company Wild Orchard is a firm favourite with our customers and a great source of natural, healthy drinks.

When LinkedIn informed me last month that it's now twenty years since I founded Wild Orchard Natural Beverages it caught me a little by surprise. "Where has the time gone?" and all that sort of stuff. Then I begin to delve back into the far reaches of my memory and realised that, Yes it has been a long time since I opted out of the corporate world and that the early years of Wild Orchard are now in the distant past.
Craft Food Traders is just a baby of 3 years old at this point but even so has seen great change in the Food Industry and society in general.
However, leaving aside the once-in-a-lifetime and Black Swan events that are happening now with frightening regularity (Brexit, Trump, Covid-19) when I think about 20 years (almost 30 if I count my corporate stints) in the Food Industry what strikes me are 3 things; the people, how much has changed, how much has stayed the same.
People:
While working in corporate I was aware of a attitude of slight superiority relative to those working in small business. By virtue of our having achieved a coveted corporate role and having access to the best of training, personal development tools and brilliant colleagues we are just that little bit better at business than our small business counterparts. We've got the salaries, cars and perks to prove it. Needless to say I was in for a surprise. Creating a viable small business is extremely difficult. Unless you are Sergey Brin or Steve Jobs it's not enough to be great at one thing. It's a requirement to be at least competent if not good or great in multiple disciplines. Sales, Finance, HR, Operations, Strategy, Marketing, Networking. The list goes on. Yes, I know the advice is to hire great people with strengths to compliment your weaknesses but that's not so easy for a startup or family business with low revenue and minimal funding. Yet many of us find a way. What is striking about the Small Business people you meet in the Irish Food Industry is their resilience, positive attitude and can do attitude. It's been a privilege and a joy to meet so many who love what they do and work so hard to make things happen.
How much has changed:
Food is food, right? End of the day, you can only do so much with it? Yes and No. In some ways we are still eating the same stuff, it's just that the street food of Mexico City or Bangalore can now be purchased in Dublin or Waterford. Therefore we have had food startups for all sorts of ethnic cuisine. On top of that, there has been a surge of activity in plant based foods and a lot of innovation in this area. Lab grown meat is another development that is only going to increase. We have also been processing foods in new ways. When we started Wild Orchard fruit smoothies were a concept that had originated on the west coast of the USA years ago but really took off in the late 90's. We rode that wave for a while. Fruit and vegetable smoothies are pretty mainstream now.
Lifestyle and Habits are where I have noticed the biggest change. Casual dining has exploded and the 3 square meal a day routine is rapidly disappearing as snacking and small meals take over. These meals are purchased now from trucks, small cafes, large cafes, convenience stores or provided free by the giant multinational employer. Food Businesses battle to be included on these programs.
How much has stayed the same:
As long as I have been in the Food Business there has been a move towards healthier diet and convenience. 20+ years is a long time to be moving.
Yes, much of the innovation is in health, wellness, brain food, mood food, etc. Against that we have rising obesity rates and governments feeling the need to tax sugary drinks in order to protect the population from themselves.
Our society will continue to be comprised of those who are very focused on their nutrition and eating healthy, those who will overindulge in high calorie, low nutrition food and those who fall into the scale somewhere between. We will continue to develop new products and packaging to appeal to our target markets.

Shopping local and supporting struggling Irish business has been prominent across media and social media in Ireland this last couple of months. It's accepted now that a massive percentage of Christmas shopping will be carried out online and many people are making a conscious effort to direct their business to .ie businesses and other Irish online retailers particularly those promoting Irish products.
Credit must also go to all the Irish journalists, tv presenters and influencers who are also doing their bit to encourage support of local businesses.
With that in mind we at Craft Food Traders are expecting to be buzzing around the Irish roads in our Wild Orchard vans delivering fantastic Irish artisan drinks, snacks and gift boxes. We are adding new products all the time, listening to what our customers are telling us and watching closely which products are generating most interest.
Every € yoyo spent locally generates multiples of this within the community as we will spend our revenue locally also. We will be supporting our suppliers obviously, including our service providers. We will get our teas and coffees locally, our lunch, our fuel, our office supplies, etc, etc. We will also be able to continue to support local charities, sports clubs and fundraisers. It's all good and the compounded benefits are enormous.

We have "pivoted" (we love the odd buzzword) our Foodservice & Hospitality wholesale supply business to online "B2C" (there we go again) and have been noticing the frequency of orders coming in for delivery somewhere else.
